Valiano de’ Nieri è un fuggiasco, braccato da nemici umani e sovrumani. Ha rifiutato la primogenitura che l’avrebbe messo a capo della gens Arcana, la stirpe segreta padrona della quinta essentia, l’etere, il quinto elemento della natura che consente di dominare gli altri quattro – aria, acqua, terra e fuoco – e governare così un potere sconfinato.
La gente comune ignora l’esistenza degli Arcani. La Chiesa e i governi secolari si servono dei loro poteri e ricambiano i loro servigi con onori, protezione e ricchezze, ma ne sorvegliano anche l’operato e la stessa Inquisizione ne protegge spietatamente il segreto.
Valiano aveva lasciato Firenze per inseguire il sogno di una vita normale, lavorando come apprendista liutaio. Credeva di essersi lasciato alle spalle il suo potere, ma qualcun altro ora lo vuole a qualsiasi prezzo.
